What Kinds of Pants Can a Dry Cleaner Hem?

The hem is the finished edge at the bottom of each pant leg. Hemming usually shortens and stitches that edge. It doesn’t take in a waist, taper a leg, or repair a zipper. If the legs are also too wide, shortening alone won’t correct the fit.

Many everyday pants can be shortened, but the construction matters. Here’s what to think about before choosing a finish:

Unusual materials need a garment-specific assessment. If the hem is worn through, mention that too. The solution may combine shortening with repair.

Which Hem Style Is Right for Your Pants?

Hem finishes affect appearance and how the fabric hangs.

Regular stitched hem – The fabric is folded and secured with a visible row of stitching. It’s common on jeans, chinos, and casual pants, where a neat stitching line fits the original design.

Blind hem – The stitches are designed to be much less noticeable from the outside. This is a familiar choice for dressier trousers when you want a clean, uninterrupted look.

Cuffed hem – A cuff creates a deliberate folded band at the bottom of the pants. It’s a style choice as well as a length adjustment.

Original denim hem – Some people want their shortened jeans to keep the fading and character of the factory edge. As Levi’s explains in its tailoring guide, an original hem keeps that original finished edge. Preserving it may involve a different construction than making a fresh hem.

New denim hem or chain stitch – A new hem creates a finished edge at the chosen length. Chain stitching is a particular sewing method associated with some jeans. It isn’t the only appropriate way to finish denim, and it may require specialized equipment.

You don’t need to choose a stitch by name. Show us the look you want and ask which finishes suit your pants. Not every method works for every pair.

How Long Should Your Pants Be?

The right length depends on the cut of the pants, the shoes you wear, and how you like the fabric to fall. For dress pants, people often talk about the break: the fold that forms where the leg meets the shoe.

No break: The hem meets or sits just above the shoe, with little to no fold.

Slight or half break: A small fold appears at the front of the shoe.

Full break: More fabric rests on the shoe and creates a deeper fold.

There’s no single correct break. Cropped pants may have none, while relaxed trousers may drape more. Flares and cuffs also affect the result.

When you decide on a length, wear the pants at their normal waist position and use the shoes you intend to pair with them. Check the view from the front and side, and take a few steps. A length that looks fine standing still can behave differently when you walk.

How Much Does Hemming Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

The cost of hemming isn’t the same for every pair of pants. A straightforward hem on an unlined garment is different from a lined trouser cuff, a specialty denim finish, or a job that also needs other fit adjustments. The fabric, construction, materials, and labor all play a part.

What Should You Bring for a Hemming or Alterations Visit?

You don’t need a detailed sewing plan. It helps to arrive with the pants, the shoes you plan on wearing with the pants, a sense of how you want them to fit, and any deadline you have in mind.

1. Bring the actual garment. If a personal fitting is needed, bring the shoes you expect to wear with it and let us know how it should sit.
2. Explain what’s bothering you. Is the fabric dragging? Is the opening too wide? Do you want to keep the look of the original denim hem? These details matter more than knowing technical terms.
3. Discuss the work and estimate. A seamstress can evaluate the garment, explain appropriate options, and provide a garment-specific estimate. Ask about any fitting fee and the expected completion date.
4. Check the result at pickup. Look at how the pants fall while standing and moving, and check that the finished edge matches the look you discussed.

What About Other Clothing Repairs—or Doing It Yourself?

Hemming isn’t the only way to make a garment wearable again. We also offer fit adjustments, zipper repairs, and other clothing repairs. If your favorite pants have a damaged seam, a broken zipper, or a fit problem beyond the length, tell us about the whole issue. Some complex damage may require a specialist, and we won’t know what’s appropriate until the item has been assessed.

Professional alterations may be more useful when the fabric is delicate, the garment is lined, the finish is important to you, or you’re not confident about making an irreversible cut. Before you decide to replace a

pair of pants, consider whether the rest of the garment fits well and is still in good condition. A well-chosen alteration may help you keep wearing clothing you already like—but some garments simply aren’t practical to change.
